The Serengeti is synonymous with the Great Migration and has the highest density of lions in Africa. The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, supports an estimated 25,000 large animals, including all of the Big Five. Lake Eyasi offers a rare opportunity to meet the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa, and the Datoga, skilled pastoralists and blacksmiths.
Three days is enough to experience each destination meaningfully. Day one takes you into the Serengeti for an afternoon game drive, day two continues with a morning game drive before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater, and day three immerses you in the cultures of Lake Eyasi before returning to Arusha.
You are picked up from your hotel in Arusha early in the morning and begin the scenic drive toward the Serengeti. The journey passes through the Ngorongoro Highlands, with glimpses of the crater rim and the vast plains beyond.
Upon entering the Serengeti, you begin your first game drive en route to your accommodation. The afternoon is spent exploring the park's central plains, known as the Seronera Valley, where lions, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo are commonly seen. Leopards are often spotted resting in the branches of sausage trees along the Seronera River. Cheetahs are reliably seen hunting on the open plains.
You wake early for a morning game drive, the best time to spot predators on the hunt. The Serengeti's open plains offer excellent visibility, and the golden light of dawn creates unforgettable photographic opportunities.
Depending on the season, you may witness the Great Migration. From January to March, the herds congregate in the southern Serengeti for calving. From June to September, they move toward the northern Serengeti and the Mara River. From October to December, they return south.
After a picnic lunch in the park, you depart the Serengeti and drive toward the Ngorongoro Crater. You descend into the crater in the afternoon, when wildlife is often active. The crater floor covers approximately 260 square kilometers and is enclosed by walls rising 600 meters.
A game drive offers the best chance in Tanzania to see the Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and the critically endangered black rhinoceros. The crater's varied habitats support zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, and over 500 bird species.
In the late afternoon, you ascend the crater rim and drive to Lake Eyasi. You arrive at your lodge or camp in the evening.
You wake before dawn for a unique cultural experience. You visit the Hadzabe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa. Accompanied by Hadzabe guides, you join them on a morning hunt or gathering expedition, learning about their traditional way of life, which has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. You also see how they make fire using sticks and how they use plants for medicine.
After the Hadzabe experience, you visit the Datoga, a pastoralist tribe known for their blacksmithing skills. You observe how they forge iron tools and jewellery using traditional methods, and learn about their customs and daily life.
You enjoy lunch at your lodge or camp, then begin the return journey to Arusha. You are dropped off at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon, concluding your safari.
