Package Overview

An 8-Day Guided Trek to Uhuru Peak via the Western Slopes, Shira Plateau & Southern Circuit

The 8-Day Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the best overall route on Mount Kilimanjaro — and for good reason. It combines the stunning scenery of the western approach with the highest summit success rates on the mountain. With an extra acclimatization day built into the itinerary, the 8-day version gives your body the time it needs to adapt to the altitude, pushing summit success rates to 90% and above with a quality operator.

Starting from the remote Lemosho Gate (2,100m) on the western side of the mountain, the route takes you through pristine montane rainforest — where colobus monkeys and blue monkeys are common sightings — before emerging onto the sweeping Shira Plateau. Unlike other routes, Lemosho gives you two full days crossing this high-altitude plateau at 3,500–3,840 metres, allowing your body to acclimatize gradually while you walk relatively gentle terrain with full views of Kibo's summit cone above you.

From Barranco Camp onward, the route joins the Machame trail, following the southern circuit through Karanga Valley, Barafu Camp, and finally the midnight summit push to Stella Point (5,735m) and Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.

This 8-Day Lemosho Route with Winter Trails Tours and Safaris is the recommended itinerary for first-time high-altitude trekkers, photographers, and anyone who wants the best possible chance of standing on the Roof of Africa. The extra day on the mountain makes a measurable difference — not just to your success rate, but to your overall enjoyment of the trek.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp)

Elevation: 2,100m → 2,650m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~6 km
Habitat: Montane rainforest

Your trek begins early in the morning with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Lemosho Gate — the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. The drive takes approximately 3–4 hours through farmland and villages with open views over the plains.

After registration with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), you'll begin your ascent through lush montane rainforest. The trail is deliberately short — the purpose is to start your acclimatization gently while you settle into the rhythm of mountain life. The trail is muddy in places and draped with old-man's beard moss. Listen for the calls of colobus monkeys and blue monkeys, and watch for colourful turacos and hornbills.

You'll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (also called Big Tree Camp) in the mid-afternoon. After settling into your tent, enjoy a hot dinner prepared by your mountain chef.

Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 — Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,650m → 3,610m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: ~9 km
Habitat: Moorland and heath

After breakfast, you'll leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail climbs steeply out of the forest, and the vegetation changes dramatically — tall forest gives way to giant heather, then open moorland. As you emerge from the tree line, the first views of Kibo's glaciated summit appear to the east.

You'll arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,610m) — a remote camp on the edge of the Shira Plateau with spectacular sunset views. This is where the Lemosho advantage becomes clear: you will likely share this camp with only a handful of other groups.

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 — Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,610m → 3,850m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~7 km
Habitat: Moorland

Today is a relatively gentle hiking day across the beautiful Shira Plateau. The trail crosses open moorland with views of Mount Meru and the surrounding valleys. The gradual ascent helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude — this is your second full day at moderate altitude, and your body is doing meaningful physiological adaptation while you walk.

You'll arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) in the early afternoon. This camp is situated near a stream with spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach. Enjoy a hot dinner and rest — tomorrow is a crucial acclimatization day.

Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 — Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Elevation: 3,850m → 4,640m (Lava Tower) → 3,976m (Barranco Camp)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Distance: ~10 km
Habitat: Alpine desert

Today is a crucial acclimatization day. After breakfast, you'll ascend into the alpine desert zone, walking on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. The trail climbs steadily toward Lava Tower (4,640m) — a volcanic pinnacle and the high point of the day.

You'll stop at Lava Tower for lunch — a perfect opportunity to acclimatize by spending time at altitude before descending. After lunch, you'll make a steep descent into the Great Barranco Valley (3,976m), sheltered by towering cliffs with extensive views of the plains below.

This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is one of the most effective ways to prevent altitude sickness and is a key reason the Lemosho Route has such a high summit success rate.

Day 5 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,976m → 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~5 km
Habitat: Alpine desert

After a good night's rest and breakfast, you'll set off on one of the most exciting sections of the trek — the Barranco Wall. This is a steep, non-technical scramble (Class 2) that takes about 1.5 hours to climb. Despite its imposing appearance, the Barranco Wall is manageable for most trekkers, and the views from the top are spectacular.

After conquering the Wall, you'll continue through the Karanga Valley — the last water point on the route — and then climb to Karanga Camp (3,995m). This day is shorter and perfect for acclimatization, giving you time to rest and enjoy the mountain atmosphere.

Accommodation: Karanga Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,995m → 4,673m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~4 km
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, you'll ascend steadily through rocky terrain to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m), the final base before summit night. The route is dry and exposed, but the views are wide and dramatic. You'll arrive in time for an early dinner and briefing.

The rest of the day is for resting and preparing for the midnight summit push. Eat well, hydrate, and get as much sleep as you can.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 — Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

This is the most demanding day of the trek. You'll be woken around 11:00 PM for tea and biscuits, then begin the ascent in the darkness. The trail is steep and switchbacks up scree and rock — the toughest part of the route.

After about 6 hours of climbing, you'll reach Stella Point (5,735m) on the crater rim — the moment you officially reach the summit. From there, it's a further 1–1.5 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.

You'll witness a spectacular sunrise over the crater and the plains below. Take photos, celebrate, and sign the summit log. After a short rest, begin the descent.

You'll return to Barafu Camp for a hot lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,068m) for dinner and overnight. This is a long, exhausting day, but the memory of standing on Uhuru Peak will stay with you forever.

Day 8 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3,068m → 1,640m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~10 km
Habitat: Montane rainforest

After breakfast, continue your descent through the lush rainforest back to Mweka Gate. The trail is gentle, and the warmer air and thicker oxygen make this a pleasant final day. Look for monkeys along the way as you descend through the forest.

You'll arrive at Mweka Gate in the late morning, where you'll receive your summit certificate — a proud memento of your achievement. Your vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
