Package Overview

7 Days Lemosho Route — Kilimanjaro's Most Scenic & Successful Trail

The 7-Day Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful and best-balanced trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the remote western side of the mountain, it offers trekkers a pristine wilderness experience with far fewer crowds than the popular Machame Route. The route begins in dense rainforest home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, then climbs onto the open Shira Plateau with sweeping views of the upper mountain, before crossing lava ridgelines near Lava Tower and scrambling up the famous Barranco Wall.

This 7-Day Lemosho Route with Winter Trails Tours and Safaris is the recommended itinerary for most trekkers. It includes an extra acclimatization day compared to the 6-day version, giving your body more time to adapt to the altitude and significantly improving your summit success rate — around 85% on the 7-day itinerary. The route joins the Machame Route at Shira 2 Camp and follows the southern circuit through Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu before the final summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) .

Whether you are a first-time high-altitude trekker or an experienced hiker seeking the finest scenery Kilimanjaro has to offer, the 7-Day Lemosho Route delivers an unforgettable journey through five ecological zones, from rainforest to arctic summit.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp)

Elevation: 2,100m → 2,820m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~6 km
Habitat: Montane rainforest

Your trek begins early in the morning with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate — the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. The drive takes approximately 2 hours through farmland and villages with open views over the plains.

After registration with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), you'll begin your ascent through lush montane rainforest. The trail is gentle and shaded, passing beneath ancient trees draped in moss and lichen. Listen for the calls of colobus monkeys and watch for colourful turacos and hornbills. Stop for a packed lunch at a clearing halfway up.

You'll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (also called Big Tree Camp) in the mid-afternoon. After settling into your tent, enjoy a hot dinner prepared by your mountain chef.

Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 — Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,820m → 3,500m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: ~8 km
Habitat: Moorland and heath

After breakfast, you'll leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone — a landscape of giant heather, lobelias, and proteas. The trail climbs steadily through open terrain, and you'll cross many streams and walk over a plateau. You may catch your first views of the Western Breach and its glaciers to the east.

You'll arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) in the mid-afternoon. This is an important acclimatization night, so take it slow, hydrate well, and rest.

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 — Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,500m → 3,850m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~8 km
Habitat: Moorland

Today is a relatively gentle hiking day across the beautiful Shira Plateau. The trail crosses open moorland with views of Mount Meru and the surrounding valleys. The gradual ascent helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude.

You'll arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) in the early afternoon. This camp is situated near a stream with spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach. Enjoy a hot dinner and rest — tomorrow is an important acclimatization day.

Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 — Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Elevation: 3,850m → 4,640m (Lava Tower) → 3,976m (Barranco Camp)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Distance: ~10 km
Habitat: Alpine desert

Today is a crucial acclimatization day. After breakfast, you'll ascend into the alpine desert zone, walking on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. The trail climbs steadily toward Lava Tower (4,640m) — a volcanic pinnacle and the high point of the day.

You'll stop at Lava Tower for lunch — a perfect opportunity to acclimatize by spending time at altitude before descending. After lunch, you'll make a steep descent into the Great Barranco Valley (3,976m), sheltered by towering cliffs with extensive views of the plains below.

Day 5 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,976m → 3,995m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~5 km
Habitat: Alpine desert

After a good night's rest and breakfast, you'll set off on one of the most exciting sections of the trek — the Barranco Wall. This is a steep, non-technical scramble (Class 2) that takes about 1.5 hours to climb. Despite its imposing appearance, the Barranco Wall is manageable for most trekkers, and the views from the top are spectacular.

After conquering the Wall, you'll continue through the Karanga Valley — the last water point on the route — and then climb to Karanga Camp (3,995m). This day is shorter and perfect for acclimatization, giving you time to rest and enjoy the mountain atmosphere .

Accommodation: Karanga Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,995m → 4,673m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~4 km
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, you'll ascend steadily through rocky terrain to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m), the final base before summit night. The route is dry and exposed, but the views are wide and dramatic. You'll arrive in time for an early dinner and briefing.

The rest of the day is for resting and preparing for the midnight summit push. Eat well, hydrate, and get as much sleep as you can.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp (camping) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 — Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,673m → 5,895m → 3,068m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Distance: ~17 km
Habitat: Arctic summit and alpine desert

This is the most demanding day of the trek. You'll be woken around 11:00 PM for tea and biscuits, then begin the ascent in the darkness. The trail is steep and switchbacks up scree and rock — the toughest part of the route.

After about 6 hours of climbing, you'll reach Stella Point (5,735m) on the crater rim — the moment you officially reach the summit. From there, it's a further 1–1.5 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.
