| Destination | Key Highlights | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Serengeti | Great Migration, highest lion density, endless plains | Spectacle and predators |
| Lake Manyara | Tree-climbing lions, flamingos, Rift Valley scenery | Scenery and birding |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Big Five, black rhino, 25,000 large animals | Wildlife density |
The Serengeti is synonymous with the Great Migration, involving up to two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles. It has the highest density of lions in Africa and reliable sightings of cheetahs and leopards. Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions and dramatic Rift Valley backdrop. The Ngorongoro Crater supports an estimated 25,000 large animals, including all of the Big Five, and is one of the best places in Africa to see the critically endangered black rhinoceros.
Three days is enough to experience each destination meaningfully. Day one takes you into the Serengeti for an afternoon game drive, day two continues with a full day in the Serengeti before moving to the Ngorongoro Highlands, and day three descends into the Ngorongoro Crater before returning to Arusha.
You are picked up from your hotel in Arusha early in the morning and begin the scenic drive toward the Serengeti. The journey passes through the Ngorongoro Highlands, with glimpses of the crater rim and the vast plains beyond.
Upon entering the Serengeti, you begin your first game drive en route to your accommodation. The afternoon is spent exploring the park's central plains, known as the Seronera Valley, where lions, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo are commonly seen. Leopards are often spotted resting in the branches of sausage trees along the Seronera River.
As evening approaches, you arrive at your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.
You wake early for a morning game drive, the best time to spot predators on the hunt. The Serengeti's open plains offer excellent visibility, and cheetahs are often seen scanning the horizon from termite mounds. Lions patrol their territories, and herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move across the grasslands.
Depending on the season, you may witness the Great Migration. From January to March, the herds congregate in the southern Serengeti for calving. From June to September, they move toward the northern Serengeti and the Mara River. From October to December, they return south.
After a picnic lunch in the park, you depart the Serengeti in the afternoon and drive toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. You arrive at your lodge or camp on the crater rim in time for sunset, with stunning views over the caldera below.
Dinner and overnight are on the crater rim.
You descend into the Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning, when wildlife is most active. The crater floor covers approximately 260 square kilometers and is enclosed by walls rising 600 meters.
A full morning game drive offers the best chance in Tanzania to see the Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and the critically endangered black rhinoceros. The crater's varied habitats support zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, and over 500 bird species. You enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor, surrounded by wildlife and the towering crater walls.
In the afternoon, you ascend the crater rim and begin the return journey to Arusha. You are dropped off at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon, concluding your safari.
