Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak, standing at 4,566 meters inside Arusha National Park. This 3-day trek is designed for fit, experienced hikers who want a challenging and rewarding climb without the longer duration of the standard 4-day itinerary. You'll pass through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert, encounter wildlife on foot, and traverse a dramatic crater rim to reach Socialist Peak.
Please note: Tanzania National Parks recommends a minimum of 4 days for Mount Meru. This 3-day version is a compressed itinerary that combines the summit attempt and final descent into one long day. It is suitable only for very fit hikers. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, we can arrange a 4-day trek.

The first section crosses open grassland where giraffes, buffalo, and warthogs are often seen. You then enter dense rainforest, home to blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The trail climbs steadily to Miriakamba Hut, where you'll have a hot lunch and time to rest. Dinner and overnight at the hut.

After breakfast, you continue through giant heather and moorland. The trail steepens as you approach Saddle Hut. You'll arrive by early afternoon, have lunch, and rest.
In the late afternoon, you'll take an optional acclimatisation hike to Little Meru (3,820 m). This 45-minute ascent helps your body adjust to the altitude and offers stunning views of the crater and Kilimanjaro. Return to Saddle Hut for an early dinner and sleep (you'll be woken around midnight).
Hiking time: 10–14 hours

You'll be woken at midnight with hot tea and biscuits. By 1:00 AM, you begin the summit push under a star-filled sky. The trail ascends steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m) and then traverses the narrow crater rim. Sections require holding chains for security — there's real exposure here. As dawn breaks, Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon.
You reach Socialist Peak (4,566 m) between 6:00 and 7:00 AM. After photos and celebration, you begin the long descent. You'll retrace your steps to Saddle Hut, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for a hot lunch. After lunch, you descend through the rainforest to Momella Gate, arriving mid-to-late afternoon.
You'll be transferred back to Arusha, arriving in the evening. Drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
