Rongai Route Itinerary: A Day-by-Day Guide to Climbing Kilimanjaro from the North

Introduction

The Rongai Route is one of the most rewarding ways to climb Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the north, near the Kenyan border, and offers a quieter, gentler, and more remote experience than the popular southern routes. In this blog, we break down the 7-day Rongai Route itinerary day by day, so you know exactly what to expect.

Day 1: Nalemuru Gate – Simba Camp

  • Elevation: 1,950 m to 2,600 m
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Distance: ~6 km

After a transfer from Moshi or Arusha, you'll register at Nalemuru Gate and begin your trek through pine forest and farmland. The trail is gentle and offers your first glimpses of Kilimanjaro's northern face. You'll arrive at Simba Camp in the afternoon.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave

  • Elevation: 2,600 m to 3,450 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: ~9 km

You'll continue through open moorland, with views of Mawenzi Peak and the Kenyan plains. The trail is gradual, allowing your body to acclimatise. You'll camp at Second Cave, a sheltered spot with dramatic views.

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelelwa Camp

  • Elevation: 3,450 m to 3,600 m
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Distance: ~6 km

A shorter day, giving you time to rest and acclimatise. You'll walk through alpine desert, with the towering Mawenzi Peak ahead. Kikelelwa Camp sits at the base of Mawenzi, and the views at sunset are spectacular.

Day 4: Kikelelwa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn

  • Elevation: 3,600 m to 4,330 m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: ~7 km

You'll climb steadily to Mawenzi Tarn, a beautiful alpine lake nestled beneath Mawenzi Peak. This is an important acclimatisation day. In the afternoon, you can take a short hike to a higher viewpoint to help your body adjust.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,330 m to 4,700 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: ~9 km

You'll cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a vast alpine desert that feels like another planet. The trail is gradual, and you'll arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit push.

Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,700 m to 5,895 m (summit) to 3,720 m
  • Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
  • Distance: ~21 km

You'll wake at midnight and begin the steep, switchback ascent to Gilman's Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim. From there, a gentle walk along the rim leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you'll descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi/Arusha

  • Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,860 m
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: ~18 km

You'll descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you'll collect your summit certificate. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
