Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where you will complete the park registration and meet your professional guide and experienced crew. After entering Kilimanjaro National Park, the trek begins through the beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation, tall trees, streams, and opportunities to see some of the mountain's forest wildlife and birdlife. Walk at a comfortable, steady pace while enjoying the changing scenery. After approximately 8 km of trekking, you arrive at Mandara Hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Trekking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Elevation gain: Approximately 860 m
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Meals: Lunch and dinner
After breakfast, you leave Mandara Hut and continue toward Horombo Hut. The landscape gradually changes as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. Along the way, you may enjoy views of the impressive Mawenzi Peak and, weather permitting, glimpses toward Kibo. The trail continues gradually uphill across open highland terrain, allowing you to experience Kilimanjaro's changing vegetation and dramatic mountain scenery. After approximately 11–12 km, you reach Horombo Hut, your accommodation for the night. Your guide will encourage a slow and steady pace to help you adjust to the increasing altitude.
Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Distance: Approximately 11–12 km
Elevation gain: Approximately 1,000 m
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
After breakfast, you begin the most gradual but important high-altitude approach toward Kibo Hut. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert environment. You cross the broad Kibo–Mawenzi Saddle, a striking high-altitude landscape between the two major volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro. The trail is rocky and the air noticeably thinner, so maintaining a slow pace is important. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you will have an early dinner, prepare your summit clothing and equipment, and rest in preparation for the summit attempt. The summit journey normally begins during the night.
Trekking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Distance: Approximately 9–10 km
Elevation gain: Approximately 980 m
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
This is the most demanding and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro trekking adventure. You will start before dawn with your professional guide and experienced mountain crew. The ascent toward Gilman's Point (5,681 m) is steep and challenging, with a slow pace designed for the high-altitude environment. From Gilman's Point, the trail continues along the crater rim toward Stella Point (5,739 m) and then onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching Uhuru Peak is the highlight of your Kilimanjaro summit experience, offering an unforgettable sense of achievement and, weather permitting, spectacular views across the summit area. After spending appropriate time at the summit, you begin the descent back toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. The descent is long, so your guide will monitor the group's condition and pace throughout the day.
Trekking time: Approximately 11–15 hours total
Distance: Approximately 20–22 km total
Highest point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones toward Marangu Gate. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes increasingly green and lush. This final section provides an opportunity to reflect on the achievement of reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Once you arrive at Marangu Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit achievement recognition where applicable. Your Winter Trails Tours and Safaris vehicle will then meet you for the transfer back to Moshi for a well-earned rest.
Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Distance: Approximately 18–20 km
Descent: Approximately 1,860 m
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
End of trek: Marangu Gate / Transfer to Moshi
