Umbwe route trekking, adventure - 8 days

This is unforgettable 8-day experience on the Umbwe Route, created for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the Kilimanjaro environment

8 Days / 7 Nights | From $2,710/person

Package Overview

The Umbwe Route is not just another path up Mount Kilimanjaro; it is widely regarded as the steepest, shortest, and most direct route to the summit . If you are a fit, experienced trekker looking to escape the crowds and test your limits on a raw, dramatic, and less-traveled trail, the Umbwe Route is your ultimate challenge.

Unlike the popular "Coca-Cola" or "Whiskey" routes, the Umbwe approach is famously steep. The trail begins in the dense, lush rainforest, climbing sharply along a narrow ridge between two rivers. As you ascend, the vegetation thins, and the ridge narrows into a "knife-edge" with steep drops on either side, offering breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro's southern glaciers and the distant Mount Meru .

Why choose the 8-Day Umbwe Itinerary?
The standard Umbwe route (6 or 7 days) has a notoriously low success rate due to poor acclimatization. By choosing our 8-Day itinerary, you add a crucial extra day for acclimatization, significantly increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) . The route joins the Machame trail at Barranco Camp, allowing you to experience the famous Barranco Wall before traversing across the Southern Circuit to the summit. This is a true mountaineer's route, offering solitude, raw beauty, and an unforgettable sense of achievement.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a Winter Trails representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, you will meet your guide for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing, medical check, and equipment inspection. Rest well; the adventure begins tomorrow.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 2: Umbwe Gate (1,640m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

After breakfast, drive to the Umbwe Gate for registration. The trek starts steeply through dense, ancient rainforest. This section is rich in birdlife and colobus monkeys. The path narrows and climbs along a ridge, offering a true sense of wilderness.

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

The trail continues its steep ascent, leaving the forest and entering the heath and moorland zone. The ridge becomes sharper, offering panoramic views. You will eventually descend slightly into the scenic Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and the giant groundsels (Senecio) unique to Kilimanjaro.

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Heath and Moorland

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp

This is the key to your success on the 8-day route. Instead of rushing through, you will spend the day at Barranco Camp to allow your body to adapt to the altitude. You can enjoy short acclimatization hikes to nearby viewpoints, rest, and take in the spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the Barranco Wall.

  • Activity: Rest and Acclimatization Hikes

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Start the day with the famous Barranco Wall—a thrilling, non-technical scramble that takes about an hour. The views from the top are magnificent. After the wall, the trail dips and rises through valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp for lunch and rest.

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600m)

A steady climb takes you to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit. The landscape is stark and rocky. You will arrive in the early afternoon, have an early dinner, and rest before your midnight summit attempt. The views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks from here are stunning.

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Millennium Camp (3,950m)

You will be awakened around midnight for a hot snack and tea. The final ascent begins under the stars. You will climb through heavy scree, passing between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, aiming for Stella Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From there, a final hour of walking brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you begin the long descent to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.

  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours (ascent and descent)

  • Habitat: Arctic / Summit

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate – Departure

Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure.

  • Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
