Arusha is one of Tanzania's most important safari hubs and provides a scenic introduction to the country's northern safari circuit. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes and with views toward Mount Meru, the city is an ideal starting point for an adventure into Tanzania's famous wilderness areas.
Serengeti National Park is one of Africa's most iconic wildlife destinations, famous for its endless grasslands and exceptional concentration of wildlife. Visitors can encounter lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, zebras and large herds of wildebeest. Depending on the season and location, travellers may also witness parts of the spectacular Great Migration.
Mikumi National Park provides a very different safari experience in southern Tanzania. Its open Mkata Floodplain makes wildlife viewing particularly rewarding, with opportunities to see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and hippos. The park's diverse habitats also support a wide variety of bird species.
Five days allows travellers to experience the contrast between Tanzania's northern and southern safari landscapes. The journey begins in Arusha, continues into the wildlife-rich Serengeti, and then heads south toward Mikumi National Park, creating a diverse safari experience that combines iconic wildlife, beautiful scenery, and adventurous travel across Tanzania.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha – Serengeti National Park
Your 5-day Tanzania safari begins in Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania's famous northern safari circuit. After breakfast, depart for Serengeti National Park, travelling through beautiful landscapes and traditional Tanzanian villages.
Upon arrival in the Serengeti, enjoy your first Serengeti game drive, with opportunities to spot lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and other African wildlife. The endless grasslands of the Serengeti provide the perfect setting for an authentic African safari experience
Day 2: Full-Day Serengeti Wildlife Safari
Wake up to the sounds of the African wilderness and prepare for a full day of wildlife safari in Serengeti National Park.
After breakfast, head out for an exciting morning and afternoon game drive across the Serengeti plains. The park is famous for its incredible wildlife population and is one of the best places in Tanzania to search for the Big Five.
Keep your eyes open for lions resting in the grass, cheetahs hunting across the plains, elephants moving through the wilderness, and large herds of wildebeest and zebras. Depending on the season, you may also have the opportunity to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration
Day 3: Serengeti – Arusha – Mikumi
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti before departing for your next destination.
Transfer back toward Arusha and continue your journey to Mikumi National Park using the most suitable scheduled or private air/road connection available for the package. This transition takes you from the famous northern safari circuit toward the wildlife-rich southern Tanzania region.
Upon arrival in the Mikumi area, check into your lodge and relax after the journey. If time allows, enjoy a short introductory wildlife experience around the park or nearby area.
Day 4: Full-Day Mikumi National Park Safari
Today is dedicated to exploring Mikumi National Park, one of the most accessible wildlife destinations in southern Tanzania.
After breakfast, begin a full-day Mikumi wildlife safari with exciting game drives across the park's open plains and woodland habitats. Look out for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos and numerous bird species.
Mikumi's open landscapes offer excellent opportunities for wildlife photography, while the peaceful surroundings provide a more relaxed safari atmosphere away from some of the busier northern parks.
Enjoy a picnic lunch during the safari before continuing your game drive into the afternoon.
Day 5: Mikumi – Arusha / Departure
Enjoy your final breakfast in the Tanzanian wilderness before beginning your journey back to Arusha or your preferred departure point.
Depending on your departure schedule, there may be an opportunity for a short morning game drive before leaving Mikumi. This final safari experience gives you one more chance to capture photographs and enjoy Tanzania's beautiful wildlife.
