Package Overview

Overview

Mto wa Mbu is one of the most culturally diverse and vibrant villages in Tanzania, located at the base of the Great Rift Valley right next to Lake Manyara National Park. This lively farming community of around 18,000 people is thought to be one of the only places in Tanzania where there are representatives from all 120 tribes living happily side by side. The result is a colourful mix of languages, traditions, foods, farming styles, and artistic expressions—all living together in one friendly place. A cultural tour here feels like a walk through the heart of Tanzania. You move through farms, banana plantations, bustling markets, local homes, rice fields, art studios, and small workshops, discovering how different cultures blend to create one strong community. The name "Mto wa Mbu" translates as "Mosquito River," due to the permanent water source in the village. This immersive experience offers authentic encounters you won't find on a standard safari, making it the perfect cultural add-on to any northern Tanzania itinerary.

Sequence of Events

Morning

  1. Hotel Pick-up in Arusha or Mto wa Mbu – Your guide collects you from your hotel and drives you to Mto wa Mbu village, located between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
  2. Arrival & Introduction – Meet your local guide, who is very likely from the town itself, giving you a unique opportunity to see the community through his eyes.
  3. Banana Plantation Walk – Begin your village walk in the lush banana plantations, where more than 30 different varieties of bananas grow. Learn how this staple fruit is cultivated and discover the different uses of the plant as a whole, from food to materials for building and art.
  4. Rice Fields & Irrigation Tour – See how water from the Rift Valley is channelled into fields through traditional canals. Learn about local rice production and how different tribes brought their farming styles to the village.

Midday

  1. Makonde Carving Workshop – Visit local artists from the Makonde tribe, famous for intricate ebony wood carvings. Watch skilled carvers create figurines, masks, and household objects, and learn about the historical and cultural meanings behind the carvings. You can even have a go at carving yourself.
  2. Tinga Tinga Painting Studio – Visit local artists who specialise in Tanzania's famous colourful Tinga Tinga art. Watch them paint and even participate in a short lesson if time allows.
  3. Traditional Banana Beer Tasting – Stop at a local "bar" to try mbege, the traditional banana and millet beer brewed and drunk mainly by the Chagga tribe. Learn about its social significance and the labour-intensive brewing process.

Afternoon

  1. Lunch with a Local Family – Enjoy a freshly cooked Tanzanian meal using local ingredients. Dishes often include banana stew, rice, beans, ugali, vegetables, and fresh fruit.
  2. Local Market Visit – Explore the colourful Mto wa Mbu market where vendors sell fruits, vegetables, spices, fish, meat, fabrics, and everyday goods. A great place for tasting fresh mango, sugarcane, bananas, and seasonal fruits.
  3. Local Home Visit – Step inside a local home to learn about everyday traditions, farming, and family life. This immersive experience offers a rare chance to engage directly with the community and ask questions.

Late Afternoon

  1. Farewell & Departure – Say farewell to your hosts and depart Mto wa Mbu with your guide.
  2. Drop-off at Your Hotel – Return to Arusha or your accommodation, concluding your Mto wa Mbu Village Walk.
