Udzungwa Mountains National Park — Day Trip & Tour Packages

A Winter Trails Tours Collection

Tucked into the Eastern Arc Mountains of southern Tanzania, Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of the most biodiverse places on earth — a forest so ancient and so rich in endemic species that scientists call it the "African Galapagos." Unlike the open savanna parks of the north, Udzungwa is a world of mist, moss, waterfalls, and towering trees. It is a park you walk through, not one you drive across. And it is close enough to Mikumi, Morogoro, and even Dar es Salaam to be visited as a full day trip — which makes it one of the most rewarding short excursions in Tanzania.

Below is our signature Udzungwa Day Trip, followed by optional 2-day and 3-day packages for travellers who want to go deeper into the forest.

About the Park

Location: Morogoro and Iringa regions, southern Tanzania. Gateway town: Mang'ula, on the Mikumi–Ifakara road.

Size: Approximately 1,990 square kilometres.

Established: 1992.

Altitude: 250 m to 2,576 m (Mwanihana Peak).

Distance from:

  • Mikumi National Park — 60 km, about 1 hour
  • Morogoro — 180 km, about 3 hours
  • Dar es Salaam — 350 km, about 6 hours
  • Iringa — 180 km, about 3 hours

Why it matters: Udzungwa is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of ancient forested ranges that have been isolated for millions of years. That isolation produced an extraordinary concentration of endemic species — plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. The park protects six species of primates, including two that are endemic: the Sanje mangabey and the Udzungwa red colobus. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, and more than 2,500 plant species, a quarter of which are endemic. This is one of the most important conservation areas in Africa.

Itinerary

The Itinerary

05:30 — Departure from Dar es Salaam (if applicable). For travellers starting from the coast, the day begins early. You are collected from your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle and begin the drive west along the A7 highway toward Morogoro. The road is tarmac for the entire journey, and the scenery shifts gradually from coastal plain to rolling hills as you climb toward the Eastern Arc Mountains.

08:00 — Arrival in Morogoro (if applicable). Travellers already based in Morogoro or Mikumi join the group here. A quick breakfast stop is arranged at a local café, and you continue east toward the park.

09:30 — Arrival at Udzungwa Park Gate, Mang'ula. You reach the park headquarters at Mang'ula, the main gateway to Udzungwa. Here your guide completes the entry formalities, and you are briefed on the day's route. The park gate sits at an altitude of around 300 metres, but the forest rises steeply ahead of you — a wall of green climbing toward the Mwanihana escarpment.

10:00 — Begin the hike to Sanje Waterfall. The trail to Sanje begins just beyond the gate, winding up through lowland forest. Within minutes you are immersed in a world utterly unlike the savanna you may have driven through the day before. The air is cool and damp. The canopy closes overhead. The calls of birds — hornbills, turacos, greenbuls — echo through the trees. Your guide will be scanning for the park's most famous residents: the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey, two primates found nowhere else on earth. Both are frequently seen along this trail, often in mixed troops moving through the canopy.

The walk is not technical, but it is a genuine hike — roughly two hours uphill, with some steep sections and uneven footing. Porters are available on request for travellers who want them, and the pace is set to match the group.

12:00 — Arrival at Sanje Waterfall. After about two hours of walking, the trail opens into a clearing, and the sound of falling water fills the air. The Sanje Waterfall plunges roughly 170 metres in three tiers down a sheer rock face, and the mist that rises from its base supports a unique microclimate of ferns, mosses, and orchids. You can swim in the plunge pool if you wish — the water is cold and clear — or simply sit on the rocks and take it in. Lunch is served here, a packed meal prepared by your lodge or a nearby camp, and you have time to rest before the descent.

13:30 — Begin the descent. The walk back down is faster — about 90 minutes — and the light by mid-afternoon filters through the canopy in a way that is very different from the morning climb. Your guide will continue to point out birds, butterflies, and smaller forest creatures along the way. Keep an eye out for Udzungwa's many endemic chameleons, including the recently described Kinyongia species found only on these slopes.

15:00 — Return to the park gate. You reach the gate in the mid-afternoon. There is time to visit the small visitor centre, use the washrooms, and pick up a souvenir from the local craft stalls before departure.

15:30 — Optional visit: Prince Bernhard's Falls or the Njokamoni Nature Trail. If time and energy allow, an additional short walk can be arranged to Prince Bernhard's Falls, a smaller but equally beautiful waterfall about 30 minutes from the gate — ideal for travellers who want a lighter walk or who have children in the group. Alternatively, the Njokamoni Nature Trail offers a gentler loop through the forest, suitable for families and casual walkers.

16:30 — Departure for Mikumi or Morogoro. The drive back to Mikumi takes about an hour, and to Morogoro about three hours. For travellers returning to Dar es Salaam, the journey continues into the evening.

19:30 — Arrival in Dar es Salaam. For the coastal travellers, you are dropped back at your hotel in time for dinner. For guests staying in Mikumi or Morogoro, you are back at your lodge by early evening, with dinner served shortly after.
